Work-at-Home Balance

Moms Can Be Productive and Keep Baby Amused

Just as you appreciate the vitality that changing the color of a wall or re-purposing furniture adds to your office, your baby thrives on diversity. Rotating his "office supplies" can help you reduce the chance your child will become restless or fussy. Swapping the books, toys and stuffed animals you keep in your office with some from his bedroom or toy chest gives your baby the chance to continually rediscover an interest in his possessions while you're working.

It is also important to remember that although a bevy of office supplies or toys in your office or having his own space may seem appealing, there are times when a change of scenery is the only cure to ease your child's restlessness or discontent. Although your workday may dictate working during the day, you can still employ some creative methods to keep your baby happy while you remain productive.

Vicki Wisser, a human resource manager from Crystal Lake, Ill., has found taking her work and child on the road to be a terrific cure for cabin fever. "I'll forward my office line to my mobile phone and take my son for a ride," says the mom of two. With her toddler in tow, Wisser runs an errand or just takes a ride to burn off excess energy. "I've learned that I can be on a conference call while he's running around the park or I can take my laptop on a backyard picnic or into the basement while he watches a movie," she says.

3 Tips for Work-at-Home Moms

  • Remember to set boundaries. Inform clients and associates of your work hours to eliminate receiving calls or faxes during time you've designated to be with your baby.
  • Prepare yourself as if you're leaving the house. Make sure to stick to your appearance and hygiene routine to prevent losing your identity.
  • Network with other work-at-home moms to meet for play dates during lunch hours or for working play dates.
