Hemochromatosis
Raising Awareness of This Genetic Disorder

Most experts find it odd that so little is known about a disease that is so common. Dr. Peter F. Whitington , a professor at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine, is working to change all that. He has studied the disease extensively and believes this is one of the most common genetic diseases in Caucasians. There are actually several different manifestations of the same disease.
They are:
- Hereditary hemochromatosis: This disorder most commonly shows up in adults when the slow accumulation of iron in the body begins to occur. Signs and symptoms of liver disease occur when the overload is great enough to cause injury, usually in the third to fifth decades.
- Juvenile hemochromatosis: This is the same genetic disease only it manifests itself in small children.
- Secondary or iron overload hemochromatosis:
