Have Nap, Will Travel

Planning Trips Around Your Child's Nap Schedule

we aren't worried about bothering business travelers."

Another tip to keep in mind when arranging for accommodations is the location of the hotel room. If your child isn't likely to take a nap outside of the bed, "call ahead to your hotel to request a ground floor room with a patio," says Stacy DeBroff, 42, a parent and author from Newton, Mass. This allows you to relax without disturbing your child's sleep.

Some resorts even have rooms right in front of the beach or pool. Denise Bauwens, 36, a parent from Media, Pa., says, "I know in Punta Cana, there is a resort that has individual pools right in front of the rooms. This way, the family can be more or less together when the baby needs to nap."

Bauwens – who travels quite a bit with her three children, ages 6, 4 and 2 – says that while most children like the sense of adventure on a vacation and won't need a rigid schedule, they will be more tired than usual from all the excitement. "Be sure to allow some down time where the kids can relax and color or watch TV," she says. "We tend to do this while my husband and I are taking showers and getting ready for dinner."

Children who are able to sleep anywhere such as in the stroller, on a beach chair or in Daddy's arms make life easier for their families. Those who don't require more creativity. Vivian Glyck, 42, a parent from San Diego, has some hints: "Take them for a car ride and do plan your day around staying in the hotel for an hour or two," she says. "Take a nap with them; we can all use naps during the day. If your baby absolutely refuses to sleep, pick him up and have a nice day. Just try to stretch them out until the normal bedtime, and chances are good they'll fall back into their schedule within one or two days."
