Got Colic?

A Colic Primer for New Parents

By Laura Cone

Essentially, Neville suggests trying anything that works to comfort a baby suffering with colic. "I would recommend you spend some time walking and holding them and some time putting them in their room and letting them cry 10 or 15 minutes," she says. "Alternate between being there for the baby and getting a break for yourself."

Experts recommend a number of ways to pacify a colicky baby:

  • Make dietary changes. Ask your pediatrician if you should change your diet if you are breastfeeding or switch formulas.
  • Create a quiet environment. Turn down the lights and play soothing music.
  • Swaddle your baby.
  • Cuddle with your child.
  • Give your baby a warm bath.
  • Rock your baby.
  • Gently massage your baby.
  • Use a pacifier.
  • Take your baby for a car ride.

According to Neville, if using a pacifier does not help, try laying the baby on his right side so that he may more easily pass gas. "Try different positions to see if they are more comfortable in one position than another," she says, adding babies should be put on their backs to sleep.
