Splish, Splash I Was Taking a Bath...
The World of Water and Why Babies Love It
By Donna Smith
Stackpole keeps a basket of water-friendly toys near the bathtub and allows Corinne to select the ones she wants to play with. "Once settled in the bath water, the real fun begins," she says. "Splashing is one of the earliest 'cause and effect' games that Corinne discovered. She very quickly picked up on the fact that plopping any part of herself in the water made quite a few waves and generally got some sort of surprised reaction from me as well. Now that she is a little older, she makes her toys splash. Partners in crime, as it were."
Experiment with your baby and find the types of water games that he enjoys. Some babies may only like the water running through their fingers from the faucet, while some may enjoy dipping their whole face into the water. And some, like Corinne, may create their own game. "Last night she stood up as if ready to get out of the bath," Stackpole says. "As I reached out to pick her up, she looked right at me and said, 'No!' with a big grin and splashed right back down in the tub. Apparently we have found a new game."
