Surviving the First Weeks at Home with Baby

Other good snacks include individual containers of yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit mixed in, string cheese, fresh or dried fruit and nuts. And be sure to drink plenty of water. "Always have some water nearby so you can be sipping it," Birdseye says. "Thirst is a sign that you should be drinking. Water is the best thing to drink. Caffeine is good to stay away from because it accumulates in the body of the infant and may result in a fussy baby after a few weeks."

"Veggies and fruits are what I really concentrated on eating," says Bobbie Schieder, who nursed her daughter while she was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force. "My husband would go grocery shopping and buy plenty of fruits and vegetables to cut up and put into individual baggies. That way all I had to do was grab a bag and go."

Ask for Help
The most important thing you and your husband can do for yourselves is ask for help. If a friend or family member calls and asks you if they can bring anything, don't be afraid to ask for food.

Nikkel, who is expecting her fourth child soon, says she's already called her mother who lives nearby and asked that she come by every day for at least a week to cook, clean and take care of her other children so she can concentrate on trying to nurse and sleep.

Chances are most people you ask for help have been through the same situation and can sympathize, and if they haven't, they may soon enough. And you will have plenty of time to bring them a meal then. For friends and family members who don't cook at home often, a local restaurant gift certificate is also a good gift. That way you can maximize the amount of time you get to spend with your precious new baby instead of wondering what you are going to eat for your next meal.
