. "It started as a little project but eventually took on a life of its own," says Garay. "It has also allowed me to pursue other, related activities. For instance, I now conduct workshops for caregivers to train them in subjects like CPR, nutrition, discipline, first aid and play and interaction, which helps moms feel more comfortable and assured."

This and That
For some moms, what they choose to do outside of their parenting role matters less than the mere fact that they're doing something. While pregnant with her daughter Emma, Heather Janes from Toronto, Canada, gave piano lessons. Later, having given birth to son Tyler, she took a small role at her sister-in-law's nursing agency compatible with the career she had left after becoming a mom in the first place.

"For a few days every couple of weeks, I would be on call for the nursing home staff if they needed a replacement," says Janes. "It got a bit awkward when the kids were screaming in the background, and I had to lock myself in the laundry room to make calls, but other than that it was a good way to make some money, which really only required always having the cell phone on me, which I usually did anyway." More recently, Janes did some consulting and clerical work for a different nursing home. "It fit well with what I'd previously done full-time, and it benefited them because I was willing to work for less as long as I could do it from home and on my own schedule. In other words, while the kids napped."
