Keeping Infants Snug as a Bug
Bundling Baby for Winter
By April E. Clark
"Don't put fluffy and soft layers under car seat straps," says Dr. Shu. "Remove the bulky coats and tuck them or a blanket over the baby after securing her snugly in her seat. Bulky padding can introduce slack between a baby and her car seat and be less protective. Also, don't go quickly to high elevations if possible."
Although the doctors do not endorse particular products, Dr. Shu says the faux shearling products found at www.kiddopotamus.com are popular among parents in northern New England, where temperatures can dip quickly. The company has been recognized nationwide for its products, including a 2003 iParenting Media "Hot Product Award" for its Swaddle Me adjustable infant wrap.
Products may make the difference in how warm a baby stays this winter, but it's the parent's responsible behavior and willingness to seek help, if needed, that will keep the infant safe.
If in doubt, we encourage parents to consult with their baby's doctor, according to Dr. Shu and Dr. Jana.
