Also remember that you don't need everything on day one, he says. "I think it's best to buy the basics, get the baby home and then go shopping if you realize you really need something. The first couple of weeks, you're probably going to be hunkered down at home anyway, and after that, a little shopping trip might be what you need."

Ask the Experts
The best advice Douglas can give is to talk to other parents, particularly those with similar lifestyles, about what items they really needed.

Kim Swift, a Louisville, Ky. mother and nurse, says quizzing a friend with a newborn baby was her biggest help in preparing the nursery. "You think you know what you need, but you really don't until you have the baby at home. There were things I knew I wanted, like a baby monitor. But then there were things I hadn't thought about until my friend mentioned them, like changing pads. And those are a must have."

Even though Swift thought the nursery was 100-percent prepared, she still had to send her husband out on Christmas Eve morning to buy Vaseline for her son's circumcision area.

To help get your nursery ready, here's a checklist to consider when you're shopping:

A Place to Ride and Sleep:

  • Car seat to bring Baby home in (safety features on car seats are updated regularly so it's best to buy new)
  • Crib
  • Crib mattress
  • Waterproof mattress pad
  • Bumper pads, tied securely with straps on outside of the crib (pads should be removed when Baby starts to pll himself up)
  • Wedge pillow (to keep Baby from rolling onto his stomach)
  • Three sets of fitted sheets
  • Twelve receiving blankets
