Two Much Fun!
Games and Play for 1-Year-Old Twins
By Susan Kohl
The simple act of walking can turn into a source of play. Because one parent alone can't give a set of twins the typical walking experience, some parents create games using activity walkers. Shanler, for example, clears two walkways for her girls and sets them off in directions facing each other. They stand behind the walkers and push them along, moving until they bump into something – or each other.
The family also enjoys bubbles. Shanler brings bubbles on their walks and halfway through the outing – as a distraction – they stop and blow bubbles. The girls try to catch them and giggle with delight when they pop.
Van Beek and her girls have made up their own games. One is called "Hats On and Off." It's a modified version of dress-up, only it's played just with hats. They also play "Fetch the Birdies." Because Van Beek's husband is a bird lover, there are little stuffed birds all over their household. The parents hide the birds and the girls go searching for them. It's great fun for everyone involved.
The 1-year-olds also love making up games using Tupperware, various other containers and pots and pans. Van Beek will often hide favorite objects in big clear containers with lids. The twins spend a great deal of time and energy rolling the containers on the floor, trying to remove the lids to capture the treasures inside.
