Tests and Procedures for Your Newborn Baby
By Melissa Granberry
For Boys Only
If your baby is dressed in blue from head to toe, there may be one more procedure done before leaving the hospital: the circumcision. Dr. Kaye says that the procedure usually takes place a day or two after birth and is performed by the pediatrician or obstetrician.
First Checkup
The first checkup brings both good news and bad news. The good news is that usually no immunization shots are given. The bad news is that the newborn screening test will be repeated (more blood from the heel!). Your pediatrician will also do a full examination, recording weight, length and head circumference. Keep this information for future reference. It's fun to go back and see how fast your baby grows and compare statistics with siblings or friends.
Don't forget to bring any questions you may have from the first weeks with your little one. Also, ask about your doctor's guidelines for calling when the baby is sick. Express any concerns you may have and take good notes – you may be too sleep deprived to remember the answers when you return home!
