10 Life-Saving Tips Every Family Should Know

Know your community's rules for disposing of extremely flammable or dangerous substances. Many neighborhoods sponsor rallies to safely dispose of paint cans, flammable liquids and gasoline containers. Safely storing and discarding hazardous items adds another layer of protection for your family and neighbors.
Fire Places Are Not Toys
Hang stockings and any other decorations by your chimney using extreme care. Securely fasten items above the fireplace or on the mantle and caution children against storing spare Legos or dolls on hearths and mantles. Children should also realize the danger of hiding or tossing anything into the fireplace. Lighting a fireplace you're unaware is doubling as a receptacle for empty juice boxes can result in a dangerous combustion. What if You're Not Home?
Discuss how your children should react if a fire starts and they're home alone or home with a babysitter. Knowing they should focus on getting out safely puts a child at ease.
