Today I Am a Mother
The Transformation From Pregnancy to Motherhood
By Stacy Howlin Clark
But today, I also can see my daughter is growing, miraculously, before my eyes. She is smiling more often than not. She is loving and kind and says "please" and "thank you" most of the time. She cries when she is sad, and she jumps when she is joyful. All her body parts work, and she is a part of me in a way that makes my life work, somehow.
Someday I will rent a steam cleaner and re-cover the sofas. I will send birthday cards on time and return all my e-mail. Someday I will sit down and read a book, beginning to end. I will wear sunglasses with the frames intact. I will know where I put things and find them still there when I go back to look.
Someday I will finish all my sentences and organize my thoughts. I will walk across the kitchen without stepping on a plastic toy and with little to no fear of encountering a monster in the midst of stealing my yogurt.
Someday I will drive a cool car with a roof that slides open at the push of a button instead of its sides. A car that is smaller than the state of Rhode Island.
Someday I will be able to sleep soundly through the night without worrying about strangers and open bodies of water, cars speeding down the street in front of my yard and federally recommended nutrients. Someday I will be able to hear about a child being hurt or lost anywhere in the world without closing my eyes in silent prayer. Someday I will care more about the stretch marks on my stomach than the ones on my heart.
But not today.
Because one day I had a baby, and today, I am a mother.
