Teething Troubles

Taking the Bite out of Teething Pain

"Applying frozen anything to the area helps a lot," says Kathy Richard, a full-time mom from Saugus, Mass. "Unopened freezer pops are good for the baby to gum, mini frozen bagels and of course, lots of cuddling."

In addition to applying cold to the gum area, offering the child acetaminophen, such as Infant Tylenol, can give the baby added comfort. Follow the directions on the label and if the baby is under 6 months of age, consult a doctor before giving your child the medication.

Additional Tips
Keep a few things in mind:
  • Never tie a teething ring around a child's neck, as it could become a choking or strangulation hazard.
  • Wipe the drool from a teething baby's face often to avoid a rash.
  • Offer a teething baby something firm to bite on. This will aid the eruption of the teeth through the gums and decrease the amount of time the baby will suffer from teething pain. Be sure the object is large enough not to be swallowed and not hard enough to cause further pain on already sensitive gums.
  • Continue proper dental hygiene when the baby's first tooth appears. This is an important part for the child's long-term dental health.
  • Avoid using medicated creams, gels or powders to aid in easing teething pain as they may cause infection.

Teething pain can produce a cranky, irritable baby -- as well as frustrated parents. But with proper information, parents can help their child through the discomfort of teething and into the process of showing off their beautiful, pearly whites.
