Sleep Concerns
Help Baby Get a Good Night's Sleep
By Kelly Burgess
Unfortunately, you may be reading this when your baby is already 9 months old or 18 months old and you're still waking up, like Jamison, "400 times a night." In that case, it's probably time to choose a method for training Baby to sleep. The most common methods are:
The Ferber Method. Developed by Dr. Richard Ferber, it's a system of letting Baby learn to self-soothe by crying himself to sleep. The parents intervene to comfort occasionally. It usually only takes three days before the baby is sleeping through the night.
- The Weissbluth Method. Developed by Dr. Marc Weissbluth, this is also a cry-it-out method, but the parents do not intervene.
- The Baby Whisperer. Developed by Tracy Hogg, this method takes a longer time for Baby to develop good habits, but there is no crying for sensitive parents to deal with.
- The No-Cry Sleep Solution. Developed by Elizabeth Pantley, this method may have the parents crying. It requires quite a bit of time at the baby's crib side, "shushing" and patting.
While there are other methods, these are the most commonly used methods and are listed in the order in which Dr. Brown – and most knowledgeable pediatricians – recommend them.
