Circumcision
Painful for Babies?
Circumcision has been considered to protect against infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases and urinary tract infections. Lately, however, circumcision has become the subject of increasing debate.
Another recent study on circumcision showed that a special chair and a sugar-coated pacifier can help ease pain and discomfort during circumcision (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1998;152:279-284). Researchers from Group Health, Inc. in Minneapolis studied 80 newborns and found that seating the babies in a specially designed and padded chair reduced their distress during the procedure 50 percent more than in infants who were circumcised in the plastic restraining board that is normally used. The pacifier dipped in sugar water further lessened the babies' discomfort, researchers noted. Pain and discomfort were assessed by the babies' crying and other signs of distress. All of the circumcised babies also received a dorsal penile nerve block, a local anesthetic.
