Cashiers, North Carolina
Patriotic Mountain Traditions
By Pam Prevatt Woll
at 4 p.m. – where fresh-baked cookies are served – is a daily treat. After dinner, the guests assemble on the couches and chairs by the fireplace, anticipating the organized game of the evening such as bingo or horseracing.
There are numerous hiking trails around this wooded area. Two favorites are Rock Mountain, the picturesque backdrop of the inn, which is 4,430 feet high and the more challenging Chimney Top Mountain. Both mountains are part of the estate and have a breathtaking view of the inn below and the many surrounding mountains. With plenty of hidden waterfalls nestled in the woods, family picnic areas are abundant.
The town of Cashiers is charming with its Village Green and many quaint shops.
Only 10 miles away is the town of Highlands. Other nearby attractions include white water rafting down the Chattooga River, ruby mining in Franklin and horseback riding in Glenville.
Families like mine have been coming here for three generations, seeing the same families we met here – from other states so long ago – year after year, each time exploring a new waterfall for a charming family picnic, making memories to treasure.
With all of its spectacular family fun, I wonder what the original owner – Civil War General Wade Hampton, former governor of South Carolina – would think of his old hunting lodge today.
