Entering as a Husband

Exiting as a Father

By Jay Sauls

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Finally you enter the ninth month. You've become a veritable expert in feet rubbing and massages. The nursery is finished and decorated. With skill you did not know you possess, you have sanded, painted, installed, assembled and built enough furniture to supply half the orphanages in your state! You take a moment to look around the house. It is truly set to accept your baby. And you are proud beyond anything you would have imagined. Even the grass looks greener. After eight long, grueling months of wild frantic activity, you finally have a moment to sit back and relax! The Lazy Boy recliner you bought recently cradles your body and helps soothe your soul. As you sit, you reflect on all the changes in your life. Between the earliest time you can remember and up to the day before your wife told you she was pregnant, you watched your world transform. During this time, a movie of unparalleled excitement has played out behind your eyes. But in the previous 38 weeks, you have not only lived, but thrived through the greatest transformation of all. You entered as husband, you'll exit as father.

You mull the word "father" over and over in your mind. The syllables dance off your tongue in a way you really enjoy. "Father," a mystical word to a mystical world dreamed of often as a child. "Father," the final ascension into manhood. "Father," the alpha and omega of a boy's life. "Father," that is what I am.
