Keeping Cool

Babies at the Beach

  • Swim diapers. Most pools have rules now that don't allow babes to swim in regular diapers. And, really, you can't blame people for swimming the long way around a baby whose diaper is bulging with questionable contents. Swim diapers are wonderful and effective alternatives that allow Baby to enjoy the water without worry.
  • Sunglasses. My baby looks like she's ready to break into a refrain from "Born to Be Wild" when she puts on her sunglasses. But sunglasses aren't just for jacking up the cute quotient. The sun is hard on Baby's sensitive eyes, especially if you have a little blue-eyed one. Consult with your pediatrician or optometrist on what's best for Baby these days.
  • Play mat. A play mat is a must for those visits to families' and friends' houses. I loved having a blanket with toys attached that I could plunk down on anyone's carpet or lawn and not worry about their pets' personal hygiene or whether their lawn was so green because they used a lot of toxic fertilizers.
  • Summer has a tendency to sneak up on us.So, take my advice: start collecting Baby's summer stuff early. Hit the garage sales, the recycled baby clothing stores and department stores and buy now. Then when summer hits you will be ready to take your little baby beauty out in style and safety.
