Better Safe Than Sorry
Getting Started on Childproofing Your Home
By Leslie Stone
Saving children's lives, reducing the alarming statistics, giving parents greater peace of mind and enhancing the safety of children inside their homes can all be accomplished by childproofing the home.
Safety Tips- Remember – anything that is taller than it is wide can be pulled over on a child, causing a variety of injuries.
- Never leave a baby unattended in the bathtub – even for a minute – to answer the telephone because that's all it takes for a child to drown in one inch of water or less.
- Turn your hot water heater down to 120 degrees or below (a child's skin can be burned in six seconds at 120 or higher).
- All poisons and hazardous material – such as cleaning supplies, makeup, bath products and vitamins – must be stored high out of the reach of children and in a locked cabinet. (The No. 1 poisoning product is iron supplements).
- Crib toys should be placed on the wall side only, so the baby cannot use them to climb out and fall.
- Don't put furniture under a window – children can use it to climb up and fall out. Also, never feel that a window screen will prevent a child from falling.
It's important that we all work together to keep our children safe.
