Better Safe Than Sorry
Getting Started on Childproofing Your Home
By Leslie Stone
Another reason for calling upon a safety expert is that many child safety products on the market give a false sense of security, such as the pressure gate. A parent will purchase the gate and put it at the top of the stairs to prevent their child from falling down the stairs. The problem here is that a child can easily push a pressure gate and force it loose, causing the child and gate to tumble down the stairs. The parents thought they did a good job by putting a gate at the top of the stairs, but what they may not have known is that only an installed gate should be used at the top of the stairs.

Certain measures that were not necessary when the baby was just learning to crawl may be necessary once the baby learns to walk, such as shortening the blind cord strings. Wrapping the blind cords up to avoid the possibility of strangulation is not necessary when a baby is crawling but obviously quite important when he is walking and able to reach the cords.
