Crib Cautions and Considerations

Aside from the mattress and sheet, Freitag advises parents to keep the crib empty. "Retail stores fill cribs with blankets, comforters, pillows and various other things to make the cribs look appealing, but parents should avoid these fancy additions to the crib," he says. Thatch agrees, stating that many of these extra items, including mobiles and stuffed toys, pose suffocation or strangulation risks. "Decorate the nursery, not the crib," says Reen.

Also important to a child's safety is where the crib is placed. Thatch and Freitag agree that the safest place for Baby's crib is in the same room as the parents. The CPSC advises parents to place the crib away from all window dressings and wall hangings to avoid accidental strangulation.

Freitag encourages parents to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for use. Instructions for such things as lowering the mattress as the child grows, securing all latches and replacing teething rails as necessary are included in the crib documentation and will help keep your child safe.

With more than 10,000 crib-related accidents each year, parents must be vigilant about crib safety. Freitag recommends calling the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association for safety information and product recommendations. "Safety is their most important issue, and the information they provide is free of charge."
