Safely You May Rest
Crib Cautions and Considerations
By Lisamarie Sanders
After her son's death, Reen began researching the safety of crib sheets. She learned that several other infants died because of ill-fitting sheets. "The scary thing is, I've spoken to so many people who have said 'I've gone in, and my child has pulled up the sheet, but you know, I never thought that it was a hazard.'" The problem is extremely common, she says, but rarely talked about.
In search of help, Reen contacted The Good Housekeeping Institute, prompting them to test crib sheets. The 2001 GH Institute Report reads, "Recently, the Good Housekeeping Institute bought 54 crib sheets at stores across America and put them to the test. The majority [all but seven] failed our test, which required that they stay in place under at least 10 pounds of force."
In an effort to prevent another casualty, Reen began lobbying for regulatory standards for crib sheets. "Cribs are the only baby products specifically made to leave a child unattended," she says. "There are government regulations for the crib and the mattress, but nothing for the sheets." Reen started her own company, JR Safety Crib Sheets, which manufactures a safer alternative to traditional fitted sheets.
