Making Playgroups Work For You and Your Toddler
Playgroups Can Be a Lifesaver for Parents
"One of the main advantages of playgroups was having the opportunity to meet other parents. My kids are still going to school with some of these kids, and I really like knowing other parents in the school," Ghesquiere says.
| It's best to start with a small group – no more than six to eight children – so that you can meet in private homes each week. If your group is larger, you'll need to find a public space to accommodate everyone. |
Once you've decided what you're hoping to get from a playgroup, you'll need to post an announcement. Veteran playgroup-starter Amanda Surkont suggests that you let your own interests guide you when choosing where you place your ad.
"Post it in a place where you might meet people you have something in common with," she says. In other words, if you're an avid reader, post a notice at your local library. If you love quilting, consider hanging a sign at a local craft shop. "That way," Surkont explains, "you're not bored while the little ones get to know one another."
Design your sign on a computer if you can, in bright, kid-friendly colors. Keep your message short and to the point – moms are busy people! Write your name, phone number and short reminder, such as "playgroup," on tabs at the bottom of the sign, so that interested parents can tear them off and take them home.
