tested the "Top 100" list by sending out writer Annie Finnigan to interview employees at one specific company that made the list: the Merck Company based in New Jersey. She made several discoveries, both favorable and unfavorable, in trying to find the real, underlying story. In "The Inside Story," Finnigan reports that Merck provides many benefits to employees including on-site daycare an lactation rooms. She found that the four on-site daycare facilities provide space for more than 900 children with the company subsidizing 20 percent of the cost.

The age range was similar to Johnson & Johnson, with a caregiver-to-child ratio of one to four for infants and one to 10 for older children. The hours of provided childcare varied by site (from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at another). The cost (though subsidized) ran between $700 and $900.

The numbers sound impressive, but Finnigan discovered that 9,000 employees have children younger than 6, so only a few are able to take advantage of these benefits. Furthermore, she was told that the waiting lists for an open space in the daycare facility at Merck are astounding. Finally, the company also has 53 sites in many states that do not provide childcare other than the four in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that do.
