The Inside Scoop on IUDs

What You Need to Know

Your medical provider will determine the type of IUD that is best for you. The device is inserted via a procedure that resembles your yearly gynecological exam. There is no day-to-day maintenance for IUD users. The intrauterine device is fully operational the minute it is in place and remains effective as long as it is in position.

The Plusses
For women like Patti Phillips of San Diego, Calif., the IUD offers a peace of mind other forms of contraception can't. "The only time I could remember to take the Pill was when I had sex!" Phillips says.

User error accounts for many accidental pregnancies in birth control consumers. With the IUD there are no schedules to follow and no pills to take. "I got migraines from the Pill, and the IUD seemed the lowest maintenance and highest efficiency option," says Nancy Miller, of Washington, D.C.

Birth control methods that alter hormones can wreak havoc on sensitive users, and many are contraindicated for breastfeeding mothers. The IUD offers a competitive alternative. It's also cost effective. "The IUD costs about 300 dollars for the product and insertion fee. That is essentially what pills are going to cost you over one year so, if you leave the IUD in longer than that it is very cost effective," Dr. Dantoni says.

The Minuses
Liza Janco of Fishers, Ind. remembers the initial experience with an IUD. "I remember instant cramps like Braxton Hicks," she says. "After they passed, I didn't know it was there except when I ha a period which was heavier and more painful than one without an IUD."
