Home, Safe Home

Part One

If your house has a "popcorn" ceiling, have it evaluated for asbestos.

  • Firearms: It is best not to have firearms. If you have weapons, lock them up, and lock the ammunition up in a separate place.
  • Appliances: Household appliances such as vacuum cleaners can present a variety of hazards. Always supervise children if they are vacuuming or vacuum when they are not in the area. Children can do creative things like try to use the vacuum to suck water up from a cup. (Okay, I admit, my kids did that!) The rotating brush can cause serious abrasions, and scrape tender skin off much like a burn. Longer hair can be caught in the rotating brush as well. Other appliances can cause electrocution hazards. Keep all electrical items out of children's reach.
  • Bathroom

Bathrooms can be one of the most hazardous places in your house. The following areas can be potential troublespots.

    • ToiletWater temperature: Set the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit so the water won't scald your child if it comes right out of the faucet hot.
    • Tub safety: Place a mat in bathtub to cushion falls and prevent slipping Pad the faucet with a slip on cover to prevent bumped heads. Never leave your child alone in the tubū not even to answer the phone. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water.
    • Hazardous appliances: Keep blow dryers, electric razors, and radios out of reach of curious children.
    • Toilet safety: Put a safety lock on your toilet so toddlers don't splash in the dirty water. Toddlers are also top-heavy and may topple into toilets and drown.
