Dr. Dad
A Time for Family
By Edward R. Rosick
"It sure didn't take long for you to replace me, did it?" I said half-jokingly to my supervisor, who immediately waved off my concerns. He explained that they had hired another doctor to work 20 hours a week while I was gone. Still, the assurances that I would have my nameplate and office back in three weeks didn't help my paranoia all that much. Fortunately, the common sense of my wife did.
"You have a contract, remember?" She also pointed out that by letting me go in the middle of FMLA time would be an open invitation to a lawsuit, and while I'm certainly no fan of trial lawyers, the thought that I would have legal recourse if anything did happen to my job gave me real comfort.
The last three weeks of my time off disappeared in a blur of more sleepless nights and handfuls of dirty diapers. As the day of my return began to loom closer and closer, my feelings of guilt switched from not being at work to not being able to stay home longer with my family. While I certainly will always have a strong work ethic, burned into me while growing up in downriver Detroit, those seven weeks spent with my wife, daughter and newborn son were seven weeks I never will regret. In fact, if I have any regrets, it's that I didn't take the full 12 weeks.
